Red Bull 381 Projects is pleased to announce TOWER BLOCK, a newly commissioned installation by Vancouver-based artist Cedric Bomford. Throughout the month of August, Bomford has transformed the gallery space using salvaged demolition materials deployed in his unique form of immersive architectural sculpture.
For this one-person exhibition, Bomford has derived many of his materials from the Toronto community and also from the building that houses the gallery and Red Bull offices. Exploring the basement, vacant office spaces, and abandoned elevator shafts within the building, Cedric has transformed forgotten building materials into sculptural form. Influenced by cities whose present state is built on the ruins of bygone eras, TOWER BLOCK will force the viewer not only to consider their own position within their structural surrounds, but also with respect to the contrasting design of the space that forms the container and locational context.
Cedric Bomford recently completed his MFA at the Malmö Konsthogskolan in Malmö, Sweden, with a BFA from Emily Carr Institute in 2003. Bomford has exhibited internationally in Germany, Sweden, Iran, Taiwan and Australia, and is part of the nomadic Tehran Biennale Urban Jalousie. In 2009, he exhibited a major installation as part of How Soon Is Now at the Vancouver Art Gallery (with Nathan and Jim Bomford). Bomford was awarded the prestigious Canada Council Berlin residency at the Künstlerhaus Bethanien, beginning November 2009.
About Red Bull 381 Projects
Red Bull 381 Projects is a platform to engage and gather creative minds to collaborate and broaden passions within the worlds of art and design. Chosen by an independent curatorial board, artists will be invited to utilize the environment as a space, atelier and ultimately a forum to showcase their work.
Red Bull 381 Projects is housed within the Red Bull Toronto office, the same space that played host to the Red Bull Music Academy in 2007. The Academy acts as a creative hub for the emerging music maker, complementing their new sounds with art borne from and shaped by the rich mix of cultures, lifestyles and ideas that is Toronto. 381 Projects strives to continue that legacy.
