The Old College Try: New Works by Jon Sasaki and Jessica Vallentin is a presentation of the 10th Annual William Huffman Award for Excellence in Studio Practice.

Red Bull 381 Projects is proud to present an exhibition of two artists who each get an A for effort. Jon Sasaki and Jessica Vallentin are Giving it the Old College Try, making lofty and energetic attempts to show the world that no obstacle is too great to defeat the human spirit. Both artists’ distinctly tragicomic conceptual practices employ a variety of disciplines to tackle such brave and admirable goals as personal development, physical mastery, and social integration.

Jessica Vallentin, a student of the Art and Art History Program at the University of Mississauga and Sheridan College, presents a series of works aimed at better connecting with her current place of residence, Mississauga. Documenting and investigating the lives and residences of fellow Mississaugans, Vallentin cheerfully forces herself to engage the city she must, by necessity, inhabit.

Contrasting with Vallentin’s relational tactics aimed at making a go of it, Jon Sasaki’s practice emphasizes the often absurd nature of generosity and the frequently perverse impulse towards self-improvement. His practice of “romantic conceptualism” incorporates film, objects, performance-for-video, installations/interventions and so on.

About Red Bull 381 Projects

Red Bull 381 Projects is a platform to engage and gather creative minds to collaborate and broaden passions within the worlds of art and design. Chosen by an independent curatorial board, artists will be invited to utilize the environment as a space, atelier and ultimately a forum to showcase their work.

Red Bull 381 Projects is housed within the Red Bull Toronto office, the same space that played host to the Red Bull Music Academy in 2007. The Academy acts as a creative hub for the emerging music maker, complementing their new sounds with art borne from and shaped by the rich mix of cultures, lifestyles and ideas that is Toronto. 381 Projects strives to continue that legacy.
