Surfin’ In Tofino - The Planet Smashers
Pretty “doye” of us but whatever. Leave it to a ska punk band from Montreal to nail the vibe of a day into nighttime bonfire surf party, trombones and all.
Best line: “Flip off the Ranger gonna sleep on the beach”
Surf Party - Fast Life Yungstaz
Probably these guys have never touched a board and this is more referential to sizzurp, but if this song and it’s exponential use of cowabunga doesn’t make you feel like a million bucks you should probably switch banks.
Best line: “I’mmmmmm soo wavey, it’s crazy, surf hardy dude.”
I Get Around - The Beach Boys
Yeah, yeah, yeah, we know. But come on. And forget all that other shit about their darker stuff being better, this one is a cruisin’ classic of “I don’t give a care”.
Best line: “I’m gettin’ bugged driving up and down the same old strip”
Let’s Go Surfing - The Drums
This one takes a while to come around to (or not), but when you finally do these beautiful, healthy looking dudes are ready to hug you and then hustle you down the beach in the dark, whistling.
Best line: “Obama, I wanna go surfing.”
Pipeline - Agent Orange
Instrumentals are big in the surf genre, moreover were the surf genre from the get-go. However, they can all start to run together in a lot of twangy, never-ending loops kind of like those fake wave backdrops they used to use in 1960s surf movies. This one puts a nice little edge on that shred.
King Of The Beach - Wavves
A lot of hand clapping and questionable haircuts. Risk taking! Get into it.
Best line: The sporadic “woo!”’s
Hidden Charms - Link Wray
A lot of music you’d consider O.G. surf is not very tough sounding, Wray sort of does away with that. Dude lost a lung to TB after the war and even though his doctors said he’d never sing again he did, with a whole new grimey spook jangle. And while it’s more fun to picture this guy surfing in hell, he’s prob doing it in heaven.
Best line: “Her lips are sweet, her legs are big, her looks can make you dance the jig.”
Surf Wax America - Weezer
Only Rivers Cuomo in his serious, baby opera man voice could make surfing sound dramatic and sad and also believable that he could surf to work, or has a job.
Best line: “You take your car to work, I’ll take my board”
Pipeline - The Chantay’s
Mostly the video of them on Lawrence Welk. Nervousness doesn’t come through in black and white.
Best line: The piano player’s jiggly hop dance.
Uranium Rock - The Cramps
There should be a new genre called “Spook Surf” and this should be it’s theme song. Also, it’s mildly about digging for lost treasure which is the bounty of the seas.
Best line: “Money-money honey, and the kind you fold.”
Cave In - The Gruesomes
These guys are as DIY as dudes who surf that never-ending wave in Montreal’s Lachine Canal.
Wipeout - The Fat Boys
Big bad babys bringing it to all the “Surf Jox” of New York City, sure, why not.
Best line: The general idea that after a 3 year tour all they wanted to do was go surfing.
Rockaway Beach - The Ramones
It’s funny and endearing to picture the Ramones on the bus with their beach totes and towels rolled up, palpably excited to the average passerby.
Best line: Chewin' out a rhythm on my bubble gum, the sun is out, I want some.
