Montreal, Quebec native, Kaya Turski has battled back from an injury and is looking to repeat as the X Games female Ski Slopestyle Champion today in Aspen, CO. At just 22 years old she would be one of the youngest multiple medal winners, let alone gold, in all of the 14 previous Winter X Games.
She decided to spend her season in Mammoth Lakes, California due to the consistently clear weather along with it's world class terrain park. Turski hadn’t been on her skis since injuring her knee in what was essentially a victory lap at the European X Games until she eased into the 2010/11 season, “I was looking to take it pretty mellow for my first few months on skis,” she states “I started late November and just started jumping again in early January but I’m feeling good.”
Finals for female Ski Slopestyle are today, but the women have been on course for the last 2 days training. “I had a good few days at practice and I’m looking forward to finals,” Kaya said yesterday, “I got my runs down in practice. I got everything I needed too. I’m definitely nervous for finals but I don’t think I could have had a better practice. I’m just excited to get out there and compete!”
Considering that this could very well be one of the biggest days of her career to date, the ever smiling Kaya keeps it pretty simple, “I'll make sure I get my sleep, get up, get some food down, meet up with my parents for a little pep talk and that’s about it. I’ll visualize my run a couple times the night before, a couple times in the morning and then go in and go for it.”
You can catch Kaya Turski’s attempt to make history today from 3pm to 4pm Eastern Time on ESPN3.com
