Stevie Smith of Nanaimo, BC, finished second in the Mountain Bike World Championships 2010 men’s race in Mont Sainte-Anne, Quebec, on September 5, 2010, winning the silver medal in a breathtaking race. Despite an injury to his right shoulder, Smith completed the 2.9 km course with a time of 4 minutes 40.56 seconds, becoming the first North American on the Downhill podium in over a decade.

After a season of flat tires, broken chains and top tens, twenty-one year old Stevie Smith realized his amazing potential at the World Championships, with his silver medal driving him to 8th in the overall standings. In 2009, Smith finished 10th at the UCI World Championships, 6th at the UCI Downhill World Cup, 13th overall at the World Cup Circuit and first at the 2008 US Open.

Smith will be competing in Red Bull 5000 Down, a mass start downhill mountain bike race where the riders need to sustain constant mental and physical effort to maintain control during the intense bar-to-bar racing descent, dealing with fatigue and navigate through muddy and wet dirt trails riddled with jumps, stunts, drops and root-strewn terrain. Registration for Red Bull 5000 Down is open to the public: www.eventsonline.ca/events/redbull5000down.
