The local duo Sibian & Faun (Milo Reinhardt and Xavier Léon) offered to the open-minded audience an interesting mix of R&B, micro-samplings and nagging synths. L.A.’s Shlohmo took over and hit hard for his first appearance at Mutek with his untraditional dubstep, spiced up with dancing loops and devastating bass, as well as hip hop and trip hop influences.
Salva was next, offering his own version of dubstep. The DJ/producer/remixer from Chicago showed his skills at mixing bass sounds with the addictive melodies and typical synths of the eighties.
Pursuing the discovery vein, Nouveau Palais (Robert Squire, Lunice Pierre Fermin et Andrew Gordon Macpherson) took the opportunity of that special night to launch some new tracks. Titled Avant Gang and relased on Surefire Sound, their new EP features excellent bass music, served up in a nineties sauce.
English producer Paul White was last to hit the turntables, giving full meaning to the word « eclectic ». All the genres passed through the DJ’s hands, melting into the unashamed electronica of the skillfull brit. No wonder why Danny Brown, the rising idol of US rap, chose to team up with the producer.
Paul White ended up in beautiful fashion a diversified, yet coherent, night, filled with lots of nice discoveries.
