Hello and congrats on being accepted into the 2012 Red Bull Music Academy

Thanks so much, honored to be on board.

Tell us about you and your music.

I'm a Canadian currently living in Barcelona, talking to from a Laundromat in San Francisco. I produce under the name Sinjin Hawke, where I basically amalgamate all my influences into a big stew.

What attracted to you music and more specifically to your sound?

I grew up in a classical household. My father was a horn player and I was enlisted in opera choruses from a young age. I started getting into Rap and R&B around the age of 11 and decided to start making instrumentals a few years later and everything that happened afterwards stemmed from that.

A lot of artists are now slash artists and you have been described as such (i.e. instrumentalist/DJ/producer/vocalist). Do you see yourself as more one than the rest?

I'm definitely more of a producer than anything, even when dj'ing, I tend to play mostly original music.

What's it like performing live in your hometown?

Montreal is such a unique city; a lot of parties thrown in strange locations, so many young people with an appetite for new music and I find every show to be different from another. It is still to this day, one of my favorite places to perform.

What do you hope to achieve with your musical projects?

I'm just so happy to be able to live off of music, travel the world and collaborate with my favorite artists. I have a few goals on the horizon that I have my eyes set on, but for the most part I'm just enjoying the present, everything happening now is more than I ever dreamt of.

What made you apply to Red Bull Music Academy?

One of the recruiters in Montreal contacted me a few years ago and invited me to a meet and greet. It seemed like a great venue for like-minded people to share ideas and develop on new ones.

What do you know about New York City?

I've only been to New York a few brief times and wasn't really able to sink my teeth in. From what I've gathered, there’s a lot of different niches to explore and a lot of creative people who are motivated to work together.

Can you describe your reaction when you realized you were selected?

I didn't really believe it at first. A few of my favorite producers had been rejected at that point so I was expecting the "Maybe next time..." email. My girlfriend read me the email and my best friend burst into singing Drake's "I'm So Proud". I guess it was a bit overwhelming...took a few days to sink in.

What are your musical must haves (equipment) when traveling?

Acidlab Miami: a smaller more compact circuit clone of the TR-808 drum machine, good for impromptu live performances, or in-studio jamming.

Sennheiser HD 380 pro headphones: almost as good as having a pair of studio monitors and you can wear them for long periods of time without hurting your ears.

Headphone splitter: for producing collaborations on the fly.

CD-R's: come in handy for last minute CD burning before a show.

Who can you not stop listening to at the moment?

MORRI$$$$$$$$$$$, NADUS, PINK DOLLAZ and BOYLAN.

Describe your music in 2 words.

Cinematic Crunk.
