Cabaal

Hello and congrats on being accepted into the 2012 Red Bull Music Academy.
Hey thanks a lot, still can't believe it!

Tell us about you and your music.
My name is Ben, also known as Cabaal. I'm from Ottawa, Canada. I'm 20, and have been making music for awhile now. My music is oriented through synthesizers. It's generally slower BPM.

What attracted to you music and more specifically to your sound?
Synthesizers. The sound of a synthesizer, be it analog or digital, can evoke such a wide range of ideas and emotions. The tangible nature of a synth enables you to be more expressive especially when dealing with technology as a medium.

Alot of artists are now slash artists and you have been describe as such (i.e. instrumentalist/DJ/producer/vocalist). Do you see yourself as more one than the rest?
I see myself more as a producer. These days though DJs produce and producers DJ, so roles are constantly changing, which is great.

What do you hope to achieve with your musical projects?
World Peace.

What made you apply to Red Bull Music Academy?
A friend of mine showed me it last year, it looked amazing; an opportunity to have studio time with the best gear, and hear from people like Steve Reich, really incredible.

What do you know about New York?
Eliot Spitzer.

Can you describe your reaction when you realized you were selected?
Shock and awe. I had to check the message about 3 times by logging in and out of my email to make sure it was real.

What are your musical must haves (equipment) when traveling?
A laptop more than anything. A MIDI keyboard as well. With just that you can really do pretty much anything. Very lucky to live in a time when this is possible.

Who can you not stop listening to at the moment?
John Talabot and TRST.

Describe your music in three words.
Oozing, Void, Dusk.
