(Toronto, ON – August 8, 2011) The Red Bull Music Academy has brought up and coming music makers together in cities like New York, Barcelona, Cape Town, Melbourne and London for over thirteen years, including Toronto in 2007. Each year the Academy invites artists worldwide to apply, asking them to fill out a hefty questionnaire and submit a selection of their tunes. We are very pleased to announce that after several months of carefully listening to and reading applications from producers, instrumentalists and vocalists in 96 countries; 60 diverse artists (including 3 Canadian artists) have now been invited to join the 2011 edition of the Red Bull Music Academy in Madrid, Spain.

Who exactly are the artists from Canada who’ll travel to Madrid?

Kirk Opheim aka Captain Kirk, 20 years old from Stony Plain, AB is a Producer, Instrumentalist (drums, bass and guitar) and DJ. Captain Kirk might be taking a break from playing in noisy bands with “odd time signatures” and “a good amount of screaming”, including the now defunct Fuck The Tundra. His heavily-swung beats are still filled with an underlying intensity. Taking inspiration from instrumental bands like Kayo Dot as well as the entire spectrum of UK bass, LA beats and Chicago house revivalism, the layers of sound in his ambient and dubstep works run deeper than the winter snow in Alberta.

Evan Doyle aka Exeter, 21 years old from Toronto, ON is a Producer, Vocalist, Instrumentalist (guitar, keys, drums). The musical understanding of this Ontarian producer, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist has come a long way since his elementary school violin recital of ‘Star Wars’. His brain freshly fed from the 21st century evolutions of LA’s beat scene, plus the distinct talents of Prince, Tom Waits and Panda Bear; he blends diverse influences into his own jittery, chopped, boogie-infused brand of beats. Exeter, this way!!

Xavier Arocha aka Xavier León and one half of Sibian & Faun, 23 years old from Montreal, QC is a Producer, Instrumentalist (guitar and bass). With so many sounds running through his head, what is Xavier to do but invent different monikers for each? Red Scare handles the ambient and noise; Young River ventures into Americana and doom. And Xavier León does the pop tunes. But it’s as one half of Sibian & Faun that he indulges his love of messed-up micro-sampling and future R&B, striking a deal with what is arguably the hottest dance music label on the planet right now, Glasgow’s Numbers. With sliced vocal snippets jumping in and out of tracks sunken in bass, this is the perfect music for the Tumblr dance crowd of the 21st century.

When Kirk Opheim, Exeter and Xavier Arocha join one of two terms at the Academy in the fall, they’ll have the chance to collaborate in custom-built recording studios with their peers from 33 countries, representing diverse cities from Tallinn to Lagos to Vienna.

To hear interviews and live shows by distinguished alumni of the Academy such as Flying Lotus, Kardinal Offishall, Jamie Woon, Natalia Lafourcade, ?uestlove, A-Trak, M.I.A., Gilberto Gil, Mark Ronson, Gilles Peterson, Bob Moog and Aloe Blacc, delve into the treasure trove of brand new music on Red Bull Music Academy Radio, where you can hear more than 4000 club and festival recordings, DJ sets and documentary formats.
