RED BULL MANNY MANIA CANADIAN TOUR IS OFF TO A GOOD START IN HALIFAX

The first day of summer also marked the first Red Bull Manny Mania contest in Canada. The amateur comp kicked off in Halifax and saw local hero Neil Blackwood qualify for a trip to the National Finals in Vancouver on July 17th. Competition was fierce among the top skaters and the judges said it was one of the most difficult events on which they've ever had to decide. The 10 minutes of the final heat wasn't enough to decide if Neil Blackwood or Alexander 'Zander' Mitchell would represent the Atlantic at the national showdown. Their score was deadlocked after the match, so the judges decided to add on an additional 5 minutes of sudden death overtime. When the dust settled, it was Neil who came up with more solid tricks in and out of the boxes, and therefore won him a unanimous vote from the judges. Joining he and Mitchell on the podium was Johnny Purcell. Local MC and artist, Ghettosocks from the Alpha Flight Crew, immortalized the event by tagging the names of the winners on custom boards which the top three skaters got to take home as their winning hardware. A cheerful crowd of more than 200 people showed up in spite of an overcast sky - which cleared in just enough time to carry on with the event. And once the event was over? Well, stoked by what they saw, most of them jumped on their board to go ride the streets of Halifax on this, the perfect Go Skateboarding Day celebration.
