Valencia, 9th June, 2012. Leaps up to 10 meters long and 4 meters high, amazing spins up to 900º and backwards sommersaults were some of the tricks the riders completed since Friday morning at the Red Bull Art of Wake event, held at the City of Arts and Science of Valencia. The lake by the Príncipe Felipe Museum became the best urban wakeboard spot in Spain thanks to the six modules spread along its 200 meters.

Raph Derome got victory at the Red Bul Art of Wake after beating Marc Rossiter in the final round. The Canadian rider put the audience on their feet thanks to a heelside 900º at big kicker and suite 270º nosepress at the pool. Derome commented how “great the level of the other participants was. Some riders such as Dominik Hernler and Mattias Hoppe showed their best tricks during the whole weekend.”

Despite his good style at rails, Marc Rossiter could not make it first. Britain, elected by Transworld Magazine as the best 2011 rail rider, surprised the attendees with a heelside backside 540º at the small kicker. Rossiter really liked the event concept. “This kind of urban events are growing fast in all countries and it’s helping wakeaboarding a lot.” The third classified was Dominic Hernler and fourth was Jordan Elizondo, the best national rider.

One of the best riders of the event, Alejandro Gil, suffered a knee injury at the quarter final round and had to be taken to hospital. Gil was one of the highlights of the ‘Best Trick’ contest, held on Friday night, where he completed a stunning Wirly bird, a backwards sommersault with a 360º spin while holding the rope. The ‘Best Trick’ winner was Briton Mattias Hoppe who completed a ‘Big Johnson’, a double onwards sommersault with a 720º spin while holding the rope.

More than 5,000 people enjoyed these two days of adrenaline-filled wakeboard, one of the different kinds of waterski. At this event, the riders were pulled by a cableski machine that allowed them go to one side of the 200-meter lake to the other while negotiating the different aforementioned modules. But, apart from watching the best national and international riders, the audience could also try wakeboarding. More than 150 people were pulled by a ‘winch’ - a tackle with a cable - set by the Hemisferic building, and practice wakeboarding for the first time.

CLASSIFICATION:
1º Raph Derome
2º Marc Rossiter
3º Dominik Hernler
