JOKERS OF THE SCENE

Why did you want to be a part of Red Bull MegaHurtz?

Blank Capsule is a brand new project for us combining our efforts as Jokers of the Scene with those of fellow Canadian electronic artist, VitaminsForYou. We wanted to move into a more live-oriented direction for some time now, as we have mostly been DJ'ing over the last few years. We are songwriters and music producers first and foremost. With our ongoing JOTS project, our work targets nightclub, so we are somewhat pigeonholed in that sense and limited to being DJ's.

We want to show that there is much more to what we do and a much bigger scope to our musical backgrounds. Red Bull MegaHurtz is a perfect platform for us to launch this new project and take things in an exciting new direction. We feel honoured to have been asked to be a part of it.

Is music now more about live performance than buying a record for electronic/dance artists?

It’s no secret that people do not purchase music they way they once did. It’s very apparent that the live show is now the commodity, with the recorded music serving more as the calling card. We don't pay too much attention to this, as we have never expected to sell lots of records, but our main passion lies in the craft of song. What is most exciting to us about performing live is the immediate re-creation aspect of our songs and the unpredictable, spontaneous side associated with that.

What's a typical day on tour like for you?

It can be repetitive - limited schedules filled with waiting in airports, sitting on planes, rushing to sound checks, brief dinners - all experienced through a cloud brought on by lack of sleep...but, then all of this eclipsed by the intense, overwhelming experience of the live show itself; which fills you with energy and reminds you why you are doing all of this in the first place. A little too much alcohol consumption is usually thrown into that mix as well.

How do you feel about the love from Canada for your music?

We are very proud to be Canadian and especially appreciative of the huge support we get from our homeland. Our Canadian fans propelled us abroad and we will forever be thankful for that. Many of our best shows have happened/continue to happen in Canada; our audiences are so open-minded and distinct. We feel our fans in Canada understand us more than anywhere else.

What do you think about as you perform? Is it all planned or organic?

As a live act we seek out the perfect balance of what is planned and what is improvised, yet as DJs we do not plan anything. I think we've become known to be different every time we perform, and it's mainly because we approach every set with an open mind and try to connect with our audience on every occasion, no matter how unique the environment is. That’s what excites us the most - being in an out-of-the-box situation where we are challenged and ultimately more creative. Any opportunity for us to take things in a new direction is a welcome one and probably the most inspirational situations for us.
