Pete McLeod Charging Up Celebration of Light Crowd (c) Scott Serfas / Red Bull Content Pool

As an estimated 250,000 spectators gathered to enjoy the opening night of The Celebration of Light firework display they were treated to a surprise aerobatic demonstration by Red Bull Pilot Pete McLeod. The 27-year-old Red Lake Ontario native put on a blistering display of speed, agility and power with his modified Edge 540 aircraft. At 9pm the roar of his engine had everyone’s attention as he sped into the pre-arranged safe flight zone that was kept clear of all spectators and vessels. Ten minutes and numerous gravity testing maneuvers later McLeod was on his way back to Pitt Meadows airport leaving behind nothing but a trail of racing hearts and gasps from the crowd. He was ecstatic to have been given the opportunity, “It’s just amazing to be able to come to such a great Canadian city, and especially after the Olympic legacy they created. For this to be my first trip to Vancouver and also to have a first in aviation by flying in front of so many people for the Celebration of Light is just an incredible feeling and experience.”

The surprise demonstration was in conjunction with the Celebration of Light, City of Vancouver, Port Metro Vancouver, Coast Guard and the Vancouver Police Department and will be repeated one additional time the evening of Wednesday August 3rd prior to Spain’s Fireworks display entitled ‘Odyssey’.
