Now that you’ve seen them up to their eyeballs in cold, Canadian surf why not learn a little more about each of the dudes who were crazy enough to want to ride with us in ‘Surf’s Up Here’. Aside from having a love of surfing, a ton of awards, and balls the size of the beach variety in common, each of these surfers is as unique as the ice formations that crystalized on their frostbitten mugs.
Nico Manos:

The first thing you might notice about Nico is his questionable haircut, which resembles a cross between Kenny Powers and a crust punk, but don’t let that throw you off. An eager, up-for-anything kind of guy awaits beyond the curly veil. Living in Lawrencetown, Nico is Nova Scotia’s first and thus far only professional surfer. He stays busy, running the East Coast Surf School and coaching the Canadian Junior Surf team. He also fancies himself something of a modern day meteorologist, tracking swells and weather patterns and then running out his front door two feet and into the Atlantic. Could just look out the window, bud.
Sam Hammer:

Sam has made it his life’s goal to rid the Jersey shore of The Jersey Shore but has still somehow managed to find the time to become known as one of the best surfers on the East coast. An X-Games competitor, Sam has also made it up to surf in the Arctic Circle so it’s safe to say the frigid temperatures some of the other American riders we brought up winced at were of no concern to him, but was one of the most avid and open fans of peeing in your wetsuit. Sam spends his winters surfing all over the world and his summers running his own surf camp in Lavallette, West Virginia. Nice life.
