Winnipeg, Manitoba native Jamie Suppes, defeats Canada’s most skilled technicians to represent the country in the Red Bull Manny Mania World Final in New York City on August 21, 2010
The contest is the latest in an international search for the most skilled skateboarders to ultimately compete in the Red Bull Manny Mania World Final on August 21, 2010 in New York City, USA. Judged by a panel of renowned skaters and industry experts, eight of Canada’s best skaters displayed their skills in Saturday’s National Final at the Plaza Skate Park in Vancouver, battling head-to-head in a fight to claim the title of Canada’s Manual Master and earn a spot in the World Final.
“I never thought in a million years...so ridiculous. I've never even been on a plane before this trip!” said 21-year-old Jamie Suppes.
Brandon Bandula of Toronto came in a close second place, with extraordinary inward heelflip manny up, then down the wedge, and backside 180 out to wow the crowd and the judges. Third place finisher Mitch Barrette of Ottawa impressed the panel of judges with tricks including a 3-flip and nose manual-180 out.
“The level of skating for the final heat was amazing! It was hard to judge at the end because each skater was really throwing down,” said professional skateboarder Paul Machnau who was one of the judges.
Two wheels over Canada
Over the past few weeks, Red Bull Manny Mania made its way across the nation, with seven of Canada’s most talented skaters earning their tickets to the National Final after performing technical manoeuvers and proving their skills in the respective qualifying rounds in Halifax, Montreal, Quebec City, Calgary, Ottawa, Toronto and Winnipeg. Vancouver will host the eighth qualifier prior to the National Final. Featuring technical combos, fast skating and tricks like inward heelflip, pop shove it, kickflip, the manual, nose manual and nollie flip out, the competitors are judged on the complexity of the manual tricks and overall consistency. In total, Red Bull Manny Mania is taking place in 25 countries across six continents including Canada for the very first time, and promises tricks and moves to impress.
