After four days of cat skiing, eleven male and three female skiers gave it their all at the conclusion of a wild and iconic week that saw the next level of skiing go down. From March 23-27 at Retallack Lodge in British Columbia, riders were challenged with the three-discipline competition that delivered: Big Mountain, Slopestyle and Pillow Lines. Once fans have seen all the athletes in action and cast their vote, it was their turn to grab the footage and have at it! Nicolas Guy-Caron created his own highlight video from Red Bull Cold Rush 2010 and got most of the fans votes.
Here is a short interview with the winner of the Recut contest.
1. What inspired you to enter the Red Bull Cold Rush Recut Contest?
A lot of reasons. For me, it was a unique chance to play with awesome helicopter shots of some of the best riders in the world. The only thing that would make my movie look like an amateur movie or a professional movie would be my talent for editing. So I was pretty motivated. Did I succeed? You are the judge. I didn’t intend to win, cause you never know who will enter, but that was a good opportunity to get exposure. I was a winning situation for me anyway.
2. How did you find out about it?
I visit the newschoolers website a few times a week, to stay informed about the skiing world, and I saw in the news that there was a contest. It was midnight on Monday, so I had only 3 days left. I didn’t sleep well that night. Ha ha.
3. How did you get into editing and video production?
I’m a bicycle trials rider and I wanted a video of myself to see my progression. So I asked a friend (thanks Simon) to shoot me and I edited the footage. And I discovered a passion for editing! So I began shooting myself, to get stuff to edit. I shot friends on bikes, sports events, school projects, travels, and this year, I began to film skiing! After attending IF3, I was very motivated to shoot skiing.
4. What does it mean to you to win?
It means a lot! My friends always supported me, because they liked what I did, but this time, recognition is more official, and comes from people I don’t know, voting from all over the world. What more can you ask? Isn’t it the dream of any filmmaker?
5. Did you think you had a good chance at winning or were you worried about your competition?
At first, I didn’t want to see the other videos on the contest page before finishing mine, but after a day, I couldn’t help it and I checked the 5-6 top-rated. I was relieved, because they were good, but not at the same level than mine. I was more afraid of late-comers like me. When I saw that there were not so much late-comers, I got a new stress beacuse I knew there was a possibility of winning. I was also afraid of the second place video, which was very different from me, reaching another public.
6. What does the prize (apprenticing on a ski film shoot) mean to you?
This prize is perfect for me, since I’m just beginning in the video world, and I’m totally open to critics and comments that can help me improve! I watch a lot of sports videos and have always been impressed by Red Bull videos and athletes. It seems unreal, the chance of a lifetime, as they say!
7. Do you see this being a future career?
Hell Yes! In fact, sports videos have always been my passion, but I saw it as an impossible dream. I have also other passions, connected to video : creation, art, design, sports, music, etc. So there are a lot of career possibilities, but If I can make it in sports videos, I will chose that first. 8. What do you like most about Red Bull Cold Rush?
Red Bull Cold Rush is like no other competition. It is more friendly, and this is the atmosphere I dig when I do sports. It is still a competition and the athletes push themselves to their limits after seeing the others, but it always remain friendly. That’s what I like about freeskiing, it is not about speed, it’s about creativity, style and the difficulty of the tricks. I would like to thank all the people that supported me and voted for me! Thanks also to Red Bull and NewSchoolers for putting up this contest!
