Talkin' Loud, Acid Jazz, Dingwalls, Radio 1: It would not be an overstatement to say that Gilles Peterson is now a globally recognised music institution. As the weekend approaches, we serve you a DJ set by this benchmark selecta.
Through his tireless work in both broadcasting and A&R, Gilles Peterson, born in 1964 in France to a Parisian mother and a Swiss father, has played a huge role in many an important artists' careers (Erykah Badu, Roni Size, Compost Records, Kruder & Dorfmeister, ...) and he has been equally influential in the crossover and advancement of diverse underground genres.
After starting out on various legal (and illegal) London radio stations, Peterson made a name for himself as a selective DJ and was soon heralded as the 'new John Peel'. In contrast to Peel’s “anything goes” taste, Gilles focused on acid jazz, latin and jazz-influenced club music – hitting a central musical nerve of the early 90s.
Being closely involved in the setting up of three labels (Acid Jazz, Talkin’ Loud and Brownswood Recordings), as well as hosting a globally embraced and influential radio show – Gilles Peterson Worldwide – with his unmistakably softspoken voice, Peterson is still in a constant search for the perfect beat.
Considering all these accolades, we are very proud to be able to share a beautiful live mix from the man himself. Recorded exclusively for Red Bull Music Academy Radio at Cargo in London, this set features Gilles DJing in support of the legendary Mulatu Astatke at Karen P's Broad Casting night:
