Can you tell us about your new project PrisonGarde?
PrisonGarde is the musician I have become since moving to Vancouver just over a year ago. In moving to the west coast I was striving for a bit more anonymity in my live and felt it best to just kill off all my old projects in favour of just building some new material from the ground up. The sound itself expands on a lot of the ideas that I have been working on under various monikers and ties together my past outputs and put them under one roof (that roof is in-fact a TR-808). I have taken sampling + chopping cues from my Sixtoo & Villain Accelerate projects, synthwork and southern drum Programming influenced by Megasoid and injected a ton of live play (especially synth, but also bass and a bit of drums) as well as my favourite influences as a DJ, from Dub to Deep Detroit House and Classic Electro and Funk, with a heavy dose of Hip Hop thrown in the mix. I am very excited to start playing all of this stuff live...as primarily it is written to be experienced in that environment. The project will be much more of a live A/V project come summer. This is indeed a project at its inception.
You are on a very eclectic tour, what does PrisonGarde bring to the stage?
The tour itself for me is just about family. I mean, yeah, it is a great talent lineup with some heavyweight performers, but more than anything it is just about being able to go and kick it with my homies, have a killer show with everyone, share some new music with people and to have a good time. As far as my live setup, hell, it will be dope. It is simple and works. Laptop, midi controller, hardware synth, maybe a drum machine, new tunes and some heavy new stuff to DJ.
Being on this tour, what are you thoughts behind Red Bull Music Academy?
Red Bull is in my opinion the only multi-lateral corporation that supports forward thinking musicians, and just enables them to just go out and do the things that they do, and be the people they are. Whether that is though events like the Bridge Burner parties in Montreal, Nuit Blanche in Toronto, or through the underground parties that the people that they co-sign and endorse though the Red Bull Music Academy itself. It is awesome to see footage of people I actually know killing it at Sonar because they were the ones accepted into the Academy on the merits of their music / motivation. I think it is great. It is pretty much the only thing like this that I support directly.
Is there any particular artist you're really excited about now?
There is so much good music out there right now that it is really hard to peg one. I am really feeling the tunes that my homie Calamalka has been doing (some of which I will be unloading on tour) and all of Ango's demo material. I am excited that the whole brostep thing is kinda falling by the wayside, it is making for some much more interesting new sounds on the west coast for sure. Some dudes I have seen killing it as of late include Max Ulis, Michael Red, Monolithium and my dude Kevin Eames. Stuff I am playing alot includes guys like Krystal Klear, Machinedrum, Jimmy Edgar, Sepalcure, Salva...man, there is just too much to list.
What can we expect from you in 2011?
Lot's of PA. Lot's of A/V. Lot's of bass. Lot's of colours + black and white. Sexy shit that people can feel, on some new new.
Where can fans go to find out more about PrisonGarde?
Prisongarde.com will be live by the time the tour is started. I have a little Soundcloud thing and a Facebook group as well, but really, just keep your ear to the ground. The mixes are starting to drop.
