This summer, a group of ten amateur skateboarders rolled through a gauntlet of qualifiers held across the country to earn a spot in the Canadian National Final, held today in Ottawa. Canada’s Birthday saw 350,000 people descend on the Nation’s Capital to take in the festivities that included a visit from the newly married Prince William and Princess Catherine. The Red Bull Manny Mania National Final took place in the center of the action and the ten competitors fed off the energy to tenaciously throw down technical, two-wheeled trickery to generate roars from the thousands of onlookers. Once the smoke cleared from the fireworks a few blocks away on Parliament Hill, 18-year-old Brandon ‘Beaster’ Bandula from Ajax, Ontario, was the last skater standing, and earned himself a trip to New York City to represent Canada at the Global Final on August 20th. “I’m excited and really proud because I was able to redeem myself,” Brandon explained through a giant smile, “I came in second last year and perhaps it worked out because I was back here in the east and got some love on Canada Day!”
